Making a Quilt Sandwich

Preparing your quilt for quilting

For table runners:  If you have a large kitchen table then you can use that but remember to put something down underneath to protect the surface from needles and pins!  If you have a larger quilt, you can follow these guide lines.  Again this is a guide for runners.  You may want to talk to your quilt shop for the larger projects.

First, lay down the backing and smoothen it out.  Make sure that you have pressed the backing really well.  I use a little spray starch but I know many of you don’t like the starch so don’t use it.  Then, tape down the backing to the table with table that won’t damage your finish. **Spray.  Then lay the batting, making sure you center it and leave even amounts of material around the edges.  **Spray.   Finally add the quilt top once again being careful to get it in the center and keep even distances from the batting edge and backing.

**I use a temporary spray basting spray like 505 or HR5 from OESD, (Oklahoma Embroidery) and spray between each layer.  Be sure to lay down old newspaper around the runner to protect your table from the over spray. ( If you wear glasses with plastic lens, I would take them off and set them well away from the spray area.  It’s just a little hard to get the spray off your lenses without scratching them.)

Now your runner is ready to quilt or tie.
